The kawau (black shag) is an important kaitiaki of Whangaroa. Flying and swimming both far out at sea and on waterways far inland means the kawau keeps a close eye on things and knows the right place and time to have a presence.
Possessed of an intuitive compassion and able to work with and in between the different aspects of a healthy environment is what places the kawau as a representation of Whangaroa Kaitiaki.
